PowerSites

What is a Fusion PowerSite?

We call it a PowerSite because it’s much more than just a demo site. With any theme purchase, you get an exact copy of the live theme demo – along with a full, hosted development environment with a web interface for managing Drupal. Or, you can export the site and use it locally or with any web host.

Your PowerSite includes:

  • Your own custom hosted copy of the demo site
  • A web interface to invite team members and manage access control
  • Secure SVN hosting (version control), including per-user permissions
  • Web based SVN repository browser
  • 256MB of hosting space
  • SSH, SFTP, SCP, and phpMyAdmin
  • Cron and clean URLs pre-configured
  • Web interface to install and upgrade Drupal core and contributed modules
  • One-click backup of database and files
  • Optionally password-protect your site
  • Publish your entire site to any web host - just fill out your (S)FTP and MySQL database details and the web deploy tool will do the rest!

Setting up your Fusion PowerSite

If you requested a demo site to be created when you purchased your theme, you’ll get an invite by email from webenabled.com within 24 hours (usually much sooner, especially during business hours). Click on this and you’ll be prompted to create an account.

If you didn’t request a demo site during checkout but would like one now, just file an issue from your dashboard.

Note: If you already have a WebEnabled account, log in, and when you click on the invitation link, the application will be added to your existing account. Then, go to your “dashboard” page so that you can configure your application.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll be greeted with a screen like this:

Configure Fusion PowerSite in WebEnabled admin

Now you need to configure your application. In the right column, under “System notices”, you’ll see “TopNotchThemes has shared an application with you”. Click the “Start your own copy” link here.

On the following screen, you can fill out the “Site Name” field in order to give your site a more meaningful name. Then, select a folder to save your application in or create a new folder. Select “Next Step”.

Then, on the next screen, you must fill out the rest of the account details including subdomain name, shell username, and setting a Drupal administrator password as shown below:

Filling out account details for Fusion PowerSite in WebEnabled admin

Just click “Next Step” and on the next page you will see a page that tells you all the account details you need to access your new site!

Info for your new Fusion PowerSite

Then select “Create my new site”.

Your site will be completely configured for Drupal, including the settings.php file, directory and file permissions, and cron. You will then receive an email with a link to access your configured application.

You should immediately update the email address for your site (under Site Information) and for the admin user.

If you’d like to password protect your site while it is under development, simply click on Web Access Lock, and you will be prompted to set a password.

Connecting to your PowerSite

You can access your PowerSite in several ways – through Drupal’s interface for configuring your site and adding content, over SSH for command-line access to the server, through SFTP for uploading/downloading files, and using SVN for version control.

Please check out WebEnabled’s excellent articles and videos for tutorials on how to use these features: http://www.webenabled.com/how-it-works

Installing or upgrading Drupal & modules

You may have heard of Drush, a command line interface for managing Drupal. Your Fusion PowerSite comes with Drush 3 installed, as well as a web-based interface for it. This means that you never again have to FTP files around in order to keep your site up to date or try out new modules!

To install a module, visit your application’s dashboard and click Drush in the right sidebar. This page will show you the basic status of your site.

Click on the Modules link, and this will show you all the modules you currently have available to your site. The Fusion distribution included as the basis of your demo site includes many recommended modules, including some that may not be enabled.

Scroll down to the Download Project section, and type in the short name of the Drupal project you’d like to install. This is the part of the name that appears in a module’s URL – for example, the short name of the Google Analytics project, at http://drupal.org/project/google_analytics, is “google_analytics”. You can install multiple projects by separating them with a space.

To upgrade your site, click on the Core Update link. This will immediately upgrade Drupal core and all modules/themes to the latest recommended version.

Downloading or creating a backup of your site

If you’d like to work on your site locally, or want to create a backup of your site, go to Manage for the application and click on Backup & Restore in the sidebar. Click Create new backup, and a full backup file will be created of all the site files and database. You can then import this to your local environment or any other hosting, or restore the backup later on WebEnabled if necessary.

Deploying your site to live production hosting

From your WebEnabled Dashboard, click on your project name in the sidebar. By default this should be “Uncategorized Applications”, or you may have given it a custom name.

Click on Servers in the sidebar, then on the Add new external server button.

Now you’ll need to enter the information for your web host, including the server address, your username and password, and MySQL database name and account information. If you’re not sure what these fields are, check with the web host you will be deploying your site to.

Importing settings & content to your own site

Why would I want to do this?

If you have already built your own Drupal site, you may not want to start building from your Fusion PowerSite. Instead, you might want to export demo content or configuration to your existing site as a way to provide a guideline, placeholder, or a good starting point. The demo content serves as solid examples of the kinds of content you might choose for your site or the kinds of content that would suit particular blocks or regions. Exporting demo configurations jumpstarts site building by creating an existing set-up and layout for your blocks and regions that were already chosen by our themers and designers as, perhaps, an ideal way of setting up that demo site with the particular theme. The beauty of exporting demo content and configuration is that it gives you a place to begin until you have created your own unique content and chosen your own configuration settings.

Instructions for exporting/importing content types

Please note that you will also need any CCK modules used on the site, like FileField, for example. Enable the Content Copy module which is included in CCK at admin/build/modules on both sites - the demo site and your own site. After that, you will see Export and Import links on the Content Types admin page, i.e. admin/content/types. To import/export, click on Import/Export and follow the instructions.

Use the Node Export module to export/import nodes and Ubercart products

Node Export allows you to export an existing node and then import it into another Drupal installation. The idea is similar to the way you export/import Views or Content Types. Using this module you can save yourself a lot of time setting up new websites that have similar nodes to websites you’ve already made.

Exporting Images

Please note that files and images in a node do not get exported. You will need to copy the images from the file directory of your demo site over to your own site. You can also use the Backup & Migrate Files module.

Exporting/Importing Views

From the demo site, you just click Export next to the view in Views’ admin, then copy the code on the next page, and then click Import in Views on your site.

Exporting/Importing Skinr Settings (Drupal 6)

From your demo site, go to admin/settings/skinr/export and from the dropdown menu select the theme (usually the default theme) you want to export settings from. Click the Export button. Then from your actual site, go to admin/settings/skinr/import and select default theme from the dropdown menu. Paste the skinr settings you want to import into the text field, and click the Import button.

Exporting your Fusion Apply settings (Drupal 7)

From your demo site, go to admin/appearance/fusion and click the “Export” link. You will be taken to a page where you can choose the theme to export your Fusion Apply settings. Select a theme from the dropdown menu. Click the Export button. Then from your actual site, go to admin/appearance/fusion/list/import. Paste the Fusion Apply settings you want to import into the text field, and click the Import button.
